General Mint and Wintergreen - Only Available Locally (USA) Now. 21 June 2024.

Recently, I've had some questions from people about the availability of General Mint and Wintergreen online.  In fact now, the SnusDirect e-store even has up this message when you visit:  "General Mint and General Wintergreen are being discontinued in all markets except locally in the US".  I've been checking with various sources for confirmation, and while I haven't received official word from Swedish Match yet, what I'm hearing is that this may be accurate.  It has something to do with PMI, and the FDA, and a bunch of other internal things, but what it looks like is that yes, in fact, they are not going to allow e-stores to sell General Mint and General Wintergreen anymore, those will only be available in your local stores.

This is unfortunate news for many.  I don't know about you, but General locally where I live is almost $10 a can.  Many of us buy online to avoid those high costs.  So, people have been asking me, what are my options?  Well, it's going to be one of two things:  pay the high costs locally, or switch to a different brand.  In this article, I'm going to compile a list of alternatives that I think will fit for those who are looking for a replacement brand.

First, to discuss General Wintergreen, let me do a quick run down and description of the product so we can accurate list and describe comparisons.  General Wintergreen has the traditional, slightly sweet taste of American Wintergreen.  The can is packed with 24 portions, which weigh 1 gram each (the can weighs 24 grams).  The nicotine content is classified as "regular", which is 8mg/g.  While there aren't a lot of Swedish Snus products with a wintergreen flavor, there are still a few out there so I don't have to leave you high and dry.

General Wintergreen Alternatives:

Closest Match:  The Moose Wintergreen White
Comments:  This is going to be the closest you can get to General Wintergreen.  It feels as though this one was made for the American market.  The flavor is very similar, the portions are 0.8 grams (so pretty close), and the nicotine strength is 11.2mg per pouch.  It's a little stronger, in this aspect.

Next Closest Match:  Jakobsson's Wintergreen Slim White
Comments:  This one is similar in flavor, as it has that sweeter, American wintergreen taste.  The portions are slim, however, so a little more discrete in size.  The nicotine is around 9.1mg per portion, so a little closer to General in terms of the strength aspect.

Not Super Close, But Okay:  Oden's Wintergreen Slim White Dry
Comments:  This one is another option you could consider.  While much stronger than General Mint, at almost 14mg per pouch, it will have more kick.  The flavor is similar, but milder.  It's also a slim white portion.  So, this is another option you could consider.

Next, to discuss General Mint, I'll do another quick run down of this one.  General Mint is a snus with a peppermint flavor, but it is on the sweeter side.  This is one of the reasons it has become so popular in America, the sweeter taste.  It's also a 24 gram product with 24 portions, which weight 1 gram each.  This one is also classified as "regular strength", which is the standard 8mg/g.  In mint snus, there are a lot of products out there, but only a few I think will be appealing to those who are used to the flavor of General Snus.

General Mint Alternatives:

Closest Match:  The Moose Mint White
Comments:  While not an exact clone, this is about the closest you'll be able to get to General Mint.  It is, really, the only sweet peppermint snus on the market.  It's 0.8 grams, so similar in size.  It's a little stronger, though, at 11.2mg per pouch.  

Next Closest Match:  Jakobsson's Mint
Comments:  This one is not super close in any aspect other than flavor.  It is a sweet mint taste, but it's an original portion, so more moist, it's not a white portion.  It's also a little stronger, at 14mg per portion, so it will have more kick to it.

Another Option:  Kapten Mint X-Stark White
Comments:  This is another one that is going to be stronger, at 13.5mg per portion.  It does come in the Star Formation, much like General Mint portions.  It also has a peppermint taste.  But, you'll notice this one isn't as sweet as General Mint.  It's still good, though.

Another Option:  Catch XRANGE Mint Slim White
Comments:  This is a good one, and one I use all the time.  It has a nice peppermint taste, but isn't as sweet as General Mint.  It also comes in the Star Formation like General Mint, but with slim white portions, so a little more discrete.  It's close in strength, too, at 7.2mg/portion.

Another Option:  Nick and Johnny Crushed Ice White
Comments:  This one is a sweeter taste, but a little different from General Mint.  It has a little spearmint, and wintergreen mixed in.  So you may like it, you may not.  It does have 1 gram, large portions, so same size and feel as General Mint.  But, it's slightly stronger, at 12mg/portion.

And there you have it!  These are some options that you could consider if you want to continue buying online.  Some are close (such as The Moose series), but some are not exact clones.  While you may not be able to find a comparable option, you can at least find some in this list above that will be somewhat close.  I hope this list helps you out, and you can find some options that work for you!
