It's been a bit since I've done a review on Swedish Match's Nick & Johnny's Crushed Ice. I get quite a few requests here and there to review this one, so I figured it was time I did an updated review, and rating, on this one! This one originally launched back in the summer of 2011 (with a redesign in 2014), and has remained quite popular ever since. In terms of mint products, this is one with a more interesting, and unique flavor. In the Nick and Johnny brand, this is one of the most popular. It's described as a "mellow and spicy tobacco taste with distinct notes of mint and wintergreen". It's one I always steer American dippers towards whenever they're wanting to switch over from snus, due to the minty/wintergreeny taste.
Original Portion:
Can Contents: 22 grams, 20 portions, 1.1g each (yes, you read that correctly)
Nicotine Strength: 15mg/g (1.5%) / 16.5mg/portion
White Portion:
Can Contents: 22 grams, 22 portions, 1 gram each (and yes, these do not come in the star formation)
Nicotine Strength: 12mg/g (1.2%) / 12mg/portion
When you open the can, this one has a mild aroma of wintergreen, tones of smooth peppermint, and a light spearmint. I pick up a subtle tobacco note, and almost a hint of wood. The pouches are nice and plump, and soft. They don't come in the star formation like they used to, but I still give them a nice fluff before putting them in the lip. There's a subtle cooling presence under the lip, as well. In the flavor, it's fresh, and lightly sweet. I notice the mint blend up front, which seems to be a smooth peppermint with a light spearmint. I pick up very mild wintergreen tones in the back, and a mild tobacco base. The nicotine feels a little above the strong level, and the flavor lasts about an hour.
This one has a more present aroma than the white version. Peppermint and spearmint greet you, along with tones of wintergreen. It has an earthy tobacco base, along with notes of wood. The portions are nice and plump, being 1.1g each. They fill out the lip quite well. They're moist, with a nice flavor release, and a cooling freshness. In the flavor, I pick up a present taste of mint. It's mostly peppermint, but with some notes of spearmint. The wintergreen mingles in from the back, and is pretty clear in nature. I can detect a nice tobacco base, and almost a hint of smoke. The nicotine level feels to between strong and extra strong, and the flavor lasts about 45 minutes.
Rating and Final Thoughts
Of the two, I like the original portion more, rating it at 3.46/5. The white portion version came in next, at 3.42/5. This is not your run of the mill mint snus. It's more akin to a Jakobssons' Mint, and has a very unique flavor profile. I like the complexity of the mint taste, but also that the mint doesn't mask the tobacco base. Very few snus products do that. This is more of a tobacco-lovers mint snus than a mint-lovers mint snus. Even if you're not a big mint fan, I think you could enjoy this one if you're a tobacco enthusiast!
