A few years ago, I reviewed the SnusRoom.com / SwedSnus Premium Express Lös DIY Bucket. Today, I have a couple of their refill bags to check out! It's made similarly, but I wanted to do an article on these, as well. So, we have their Premium Standardmald (Standard Grind) Refill Bag, and also their Premium Grovmald (Coarse Grind) Refill Bag. Both of these are a great way to save money, costing $69.90 per bag. This bag yields 1.5kg (1500 grams) of loose snus, or almost 36 cans (at 42 grams each) of finished snus! That's less than $2 a can, so you can't beat that price!
Another reason I wanted to talk about these is because of the news that at some point, US consumers may not be able to get Swedish Match / PMI products anymore. If you missed this news, I wrote an article on it a little while back. As someone who uses a lot of Prima Fint, I've been needing to find an alternative product in the event I can't get that anymore. So, this is something we're going to try out today!
One note, Grovmald means "coarse grind", it doesn't mean it's going to taste like Grov Snus. However, if you want it to, they have a Geranium flavor bag you can add that gets you pretty close.
So, first thing you're going to do is pour the bag into a mixing bowl. After that, you'll need to add water. They suggest 7-8dL. Last time, I did 7.25dL and I found that to be too much, so this time I did 7dL (about 3 cups) which was a lot better in terms of how it turned out.
From here, simply mix it up! I used a handheld kitchen mixer and it mixed the tobacco and the water pretty well. This whole process took maybe 4 minutes, and I was done! After that, you're going to take it and put it into cold storage (a refrigerator) for 4 days.
Last tine I did this before I put it into cold storage, this time I did it after. They have a kneading bag for about $5 you can use, or I bought one from Amazon (here) that works the same. I had one of their bags but couldn't find it, so I Prime'd this one and had it the next day, it just cost a little more, about $8 for the bag. But you do have another option if you don't have one of theirs and need one. So, add your tobacco into it, knead it like you would with dough, then you're good to go!
I put it into some old snuff cans I had sitting around. On the left you'll find the Standardmald, which you can see is a pretty fine grind. On the right, the Grovmald, which looks to be more coarse. Both of these baked really well, so the moisture amount was dead on. The fine grind (Standardmald) did bake easier than the coarse grind (Grovmald), but I was able to handbake both pretty quickly. They packed well in the lip, and had a good flavor release. Aroma and flavor-wise, these have a really good natural tobacco presence. I didn't add any flavor, so I could test them and see what their natural qualities were, and I was quite pleased. The flavor is a really good, rich, robust, earthy tobacco flavor. For someone like me who likes Prima Fint, I could easily use this in its place, because it's a very simple, basic tobacco flavor. Nicotine-wise, it has a nice delivery at the regular strength level. The longevity of the prilla and flavor is pretty satisfactory, about 40-45 minutes, same as other brands loose snus.
Rating and Final Thoughts
I didn't do a new rating for this one, I just used my old one - 3.79/5. If this stuff as premium as Swedish Match loose? Well no. But is it good? Yes. Can you use it day in and day out? Absolutely. So, when the day comes that I can't get Swedish Match products anymore, I'll easily be able to use this one. I like the fine grind a little more myself, but the coarse grind was just as good! You can't go wrong with either one.
