I'm not sure how many of you will remember this can, but in the past, LD had a product under the Gallaher brand, "LD Juniper Portion". So this product isn't exactly "new", it's a return from the past, but this time in a white portion. Jonas Björnum, Brand Manager at JTI Sweden says, "It is about time that the juniper segment to competition. [The] juniper segment accounts for 9.1 percent of the Swedish snus market, even though there are relatively few snuff products with juniper character. We see great potential in LD Juniper White, who will become an affordable option in a segment that currently has a very high average price. LD Juniper White is, like all products in the LD family, a traditional Swedish snus of high quality. Meanwhile, the launch yet another example of the LD is snus brand that dares to challenge the prevailing norms. Premium Snus is generally too high priced. We believe that good snuff does not have to cost the earth and is therefore launching affordable options such as LD Juniper Berry White. By combining Swedish tobacco expertise with a worldwide commodity network, we can offer quality snuff at a lower price than many of our competitors."
The taste description of this snus says, "LD White Juniper is a portion snus with mild, pure flavor of tobacco flavored with juniper berries, providing a good naturalistic taste. Less moisture produces a drier portion." I enjoy juniper, so I picked up a can of this from Northerner.com to try. When you open a can, the aroma that comes through is juniper, but more muted than is common in Goteborg's Rape. The portions are white, and have an average moisture content.
The flavor is very predominantly juniper, but with almost a blueberry hint in the flavor and a little citrus taste in the back wrapped in a mellow salt balance. Going into this one, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised that this is a pretty good tasting snus. I've been enjoying a lot of Goteborg's Rape Slim lately, and I enjoy that one more than this one, so I don't foresee it taking the place of GR, however if you're a fan of LD, and want to save a little money, you could check this one out. LD Enbar is an 18g can, whereas GR White is a 21.6g can. The LD Enbar is roughly 1.00$ USD cheaper per can, so you save about 10$ per roll. If you're price conscious when it comes to snus, this is one that you don't have to sacrifice taste to save a little money. It's not the same as Goteborg's Rape, but the flavor is similar, and it's of a good enough quality that I could see someone using it full time.
