SwedSnus / SnusRoom Super Dry (DIY Snus) - How To & Review. 26 November 2022.

Today, we're going to be reviewing some new products by SwedSnus / SnusRoom.com!  These are their newest products known as "Super Dry".  Why "Super Dry"?  Because there are places where snus orders are taxed by weight.  Removing the moisture removes a lot of weight and makes a cheaper product!  From there, you can add moisture and flavoring to make your own snus.  I've reviewed a lot of their products before, and have done several how to articles and videos, so I thought I would do the same with this one.  We're going to be checking out three of their new products:  Fat Boy, Notch, and Buster!  These are all basically the same other than their weight and portion size.  The flavor is the same across the board - all of these are unflavored/base tobacco, so how they turn out is entirely up to you.  But, if you want to go the flavor route, there are options!  Before we get into all this though, I do want to quickly touch on the price for these.

Cost Breakdown
Fat Boy - 500 portions ($26.95 USD = $0.053/portion or $1.078/can)
Buster - 400 portions ($26.95 USD = $0.067/portion or $1.347/can)
Notch - 500 portions ($24.95 USD = $0.049/portion or $0.998/can)

Obviously adding in flavors and shipping cost would raise the price from there, but that's just a quick base breakdown on the bags themselves.

Flavors:

In this review, I have 10 of their flavors that we'll be testing out.  When I did this review, I didn't do whole bags, I did bags of 20 portions each so that I could test out all of the flavors.  So, at the end of this how to I can do a quick once-over and talk about how all the flavors turn out in the finished products.

Portions (Pre-Moisture):

Here is a look at the portions pre-moisture.  Notch is the more light weight one at 0.23g (30mm x 18mm).  Fat Boy is more regular size, at 0.30g (33mm x 18mm).  And then Buster is the big boy, at 0.38g (33mm x 18mm).  The nicotine strengths across the board (dry) are the same, 26mg/g and 13mg/g wet.  With the lighter weights, Fat Boy is 7.8mg/portion (dry), Notch is 5.98mg/portion (dry), and Buster is 9.88mg/portion (dry).  Obviously once we add moisture, the mg/portion will change, but we'll cover all that later.  You can use these completely dry, but I wouldn't recommend it.  They're very light, and very basic.  If you want unflavored, I'd add moisture to it, but I wouldn't recommend going completely dry with these.

Adding Moisture

With each one, they recommend a certain moisture "range".  With Fat Boy and Buster, they recommend adding 1.5dL (150mL) to 1.8dL (180mL) per bag.  With Notch, they recommend adding 1.1dL (110mL) to 1.4dL (140mL) per bag.  To test these, I did one back each at each moisture amount.  And then with the flavor, they're all basically 1/2 bottle per bag, and Paré and Original get 1 bottle per bag.  Doing some math, Paré and Original would be 0.016mL per portion, and the rest would be 0.008mL per portion.  I stuck with their recommended flavor amounts.

Finished:  Fat Boy

Looking at the finished product, they ended up between 0.6-0.8g depending on moisture amount.  Finished, that would be 7.8mg/portion-10.4mg/portion nicotine.  With Fat Boy, they both turned out quite moist, but I found the lighter moisture amount to be better (1.5dL).  Honestly, I might cut that one down a little to 1.4dL.

Finished Buster

Buster turned out like Fat Boy, but I did find the 1.5dL moisture amount to be better.  The higher one was too moist.  Nicotine ended up at 7.8mg/portion-9.75mg/portion, depending on final weight.  I think the 1.5dL amount was the better one, but again, like with Fat Boy, I think I might cut that back to 1.4dL per bag, personally.

Finished Notch

With Notch, I think the 1.1dL amount actually turned out really well.  Better than the 1.4dL, honestly.  The portions finished out lighter, 0.5-0.65g each, depending on moisture.  These are definitely going to be for those who like a lighter portion.  Nicotine ended up at 6.5mg/portion-8.45mg/portion, so similar to the other two.

The Final Result (Overall)

I'm not going to do big reviews on each flavor, but I will touch on some overall notes, and then talk briefly about how the flavors turned out for each one.  The portions are much better moist.  They have a soft feel and are comfortable under the lip.  The heavier moisture amounts had too much drip, so I'd stick with the lighter amount, personally.  The nicotine strengths were all comfortable, feeling to deliver between regular strength to strong.  The flavor longevity for all of these was satisfactory, and comparable to other original portion snus products on the market:  lasting between 45 to 50 minutes, on average.  The more moist ones didn't last as long as the less moist ones.  Now, on the flavors, I'll talk about each one and what I thought about them.

Flavor:  Special
Flavor Description:  "Swedsnus Special, flavoured with fresh citrus from Bergamot and clear smoke notes".
My Thoughts:  Special is kind of like a smokier General.  It has a nice bergamot taste with a simple base tobacco, along with light tones of pepper, and then a smokiness to it.

Flavor:  Energy Drink
Flavor Description:  "Swedsnus flavour with a powerful and clear taste of the world's most famous energy drink".
My Thoughts:  This one was my favorite.  It tastes like Red Bull!  The tart berry energy drink flavor is in the front, and then a nice tobacco base with almost a subtle chocolate to it.

Flavor:  Geranium
Flavor Description:  "Flavored with characteristic Geranium and a light note of Cedarwood".
My Thoughts:  This one is the "Grov clone".  It has an earthy base tobacco taste to it, along with a taste of green herbs and a floral touch of geranium.  There's some woodsy notes from the cedar, and a very light sweetness.

Flavor:  Rökarom
Flavor Description:  "Swedsnus Smoke flavour gives the natural tobacco taste of the portions an additional depth with a traditional smoke character".
My Thoughts:  This one was very interesting, it reminded me of BBQ chips for some reason.  It has a nice taste of mesquite, and hickory!  This would be a fun flavor to add to other stuff to make it smokier.

Flavor:  Åttan
Flavor Description:  "Swedsnus version of a traditionally full and robust snus flavor with several hundred years of history on the Swedish snus market".
My Thoughts:  In case you didn't know, this one is the "Ettan clone".  They really zeroed in on the chocolate taste; this one has a present taste of milk chocolate.  I pick up an earthy base tobacco, and a very slight smokiness.

Flavor:  Anis
Flavor Description:  "Powerful and long-lasting taste of pure and unsweetened licorice".
My Thoughts:  This one is a straightforward licorice taste.  The black licorice flavor comes through in a very smooth, slightly sweet way.

Flavor:  Lakrits
Flavor Description:  "Swedsnus Licorice, flavoured with powerful oil of aniseed and well-balanced smoke, which gives a clear, deep and long-lasting licorice flavour".
My Thoughts:  This one is a little different from anis.  It does have a present licorice taste to it, but it's not as sweet.  Also, this one is a smokier licorice, which made it pretty interesting!

Flavor:  Bergamot
Flavor Description:  "Snus flavour with pure Bergamot for the characteristically fresh citrus flavour that has been used for generations to flavour Swedish snus".
My Thoughts:  This one is closer to a "General clone".  It has a present bergamot, and a light sweetness to it.  It's slightly peppery, but not as peppery as regular General.  The tobacco base is also milder on this one.

Flavor:  Paré
Flavor Description:  "Flavour classic from Gothenburg! Well-balanced and aromatic combination of natural lavender and juniper, together with a note of citrus for freshness and a light sweetness".
My Thoughts:  This one is the "Göteborgs Rapé" clone.  I pick up a nice present tone of juniper.  It's semi-sweet, and lightly herbal.  I also notice an earthy tobacco base.  It's not as citrusy as GR, but it does have an interesting pine note to it.

Flavor:  Original
Flavor Description:  "Swedsnus Original, flavored with mild Rose, Bergamot and a light note of Smoke".
My Thoughts:  This one is kind of like a "Skruf clone".  It has a nice mild bergamot taste.  There are slight floral notes from the rose, as well.  The tobacco base is earthy, and gentle.  This one also has a touch of smoke to it, which makes it pretty different.

Wrap-Up and Final Thoughts

This was a fun little experiment!  I like doing these DIY products, they're lots of fun to make.  If you want, you can grab the packages and flavoring from SnusRoom.com.  They also have DIY loose, which is very fun.  If you grab them, don't forget to use the SNUSROOM15 code to save 15% off your order.  Buying in bulk like this, 15% off saves a LOT of cost.

As far as the flavors go, they also make a whisky one which is very good.  Of the ones I tried today, Energy Drink was my favorite.  Paré was also good, and a great GR clone.  For a traditional flavor, I'd probably stick with the standard Bergamot flavoring.  Oh, and mint lovers, they do a mint flavor, too.  But for me, Energy Drink, Bergamot, Whisky, and Paré are my favorite flavors they offer!

NOTE:  The manufacturer informed me that these products have a shelf life of 5 years, and are ideal for those who like to stock up and the prepper community.
