Grizzly Straight (Pouches) Dip - Review. 10 December 2021.

Recently I announced that Snubie.com is getting back to basics - and that means more tobacco content.  I've had some requests to review American moist snuff/dipping tobacco, and as a tobacco enthusiast I figured what the heck, why not.  I'm a snus guy, don't get me wrong.  But I do enjoy all things tobacco!  I still believe snus to be the best harm reduced option for smokeless tobacco enjoyment/smoking cessation.  Grizzly is a relatively new brand, introduced in 2001 by the American Snuff Co (a subsidiary of Reynolds American).  It's a popular brand and has 25% of total US market share.  This particular Grizzly product is said to have 100% American tobacco.  Some Grizzly products have lower, but this one sits at 100%.

Product Details
Flavor Description:  "Big and bold straight flavor with the convenience of a pouch. Enjoy the flavor of premium 100% American dark-fired tobacco in a moist, comfortable pouch."
Can Contents:  0.84oz (23.94g) / 18 pouches, 1.33g each
Nicotine Strength:  Source put it between 10.3mg/g to 11.2mg/g.

Usage
Of course, American moist snuff is a fermented product.  This means that you'll need to spit your saliva.  Traditionally, it is put in the lower lip.  However, as a snuser, I don't use it the regular way.  I take a pinch (without packing the can), and throw it in my upper lip.  That means less salivary gland contact and less spit.  Basically, I use it like regular lös snus.

When you open the can, the familiar aroma of "straight" comes through.  Chemically, it's similar to root beer, and even wintergreen, so you may get vibes of those things with straight products.  I like the "straight" character, because it isn't one we have in the world of snus.  I also pick up some smoky notes in the aroma, some hints of wood, and an earthy tobacco base.  The pouches are big, plump, and quite moist!  You'll encounter a pretty quick flavor release with this one.  In the flavor, it has a smoky, sweet, and spicy character to it.  The straight flavor is quite unique, but one that's really enjoyable.  I'm a big root beer fan, which is why I think I gravitate to these tastes.  The wooden notes of hickory come through clearly from the background, along with an earthy, semi-dark base tobacco character.  The flavor lasts about 45-50 minutes, and I find the strength to deliver at the regular/normal mark.

Rating and Final Thoughts

As mentioned before, I'm a big fan of the straight flavor.  It's not something we get to enjoy in the world of snus, so when I venture into dip-land, I gravitate to this type of taste.  As a lover of root beer, this is a familiar flavor for me, and one I rather do enjoy.  I rated this one at 3.92/5.  I imagine if I were a dip user, straights would be a large portion of my usage.  Also, the Grizzly brand is a solid one.  Where I live, it's a cheaper brand, but you get a solid quality for the cheaper price.

Disclaimer:  I'm still a snus guy.  If you're looking to switch from smoking to a safer form of smokeless tobacco, I still encourage Swedish Snus being that option.  In my opinion, Swedish Snus is the most enjoyable, safest oral smokeless tobacco product available.  Dip is a fun excursion from time to time, but I still encourage snus usage over dip usage.  If you want to learn more about Swedish Snus, you can check out our Snus FAQ here, or this informative video about snus, here.
