Goteborg's Rape Hjortron - Review. 10 December 2014.

Review Updated: 11 February 2021

Göteborgs Rapé Hjortron is one that doesn't get talked about much, but it's always been a snus that I like to use here and there.  This snus originally launched in the summer of 2014 as GR Summer Edition 2014, and proved to be popular enough that Swedish Match brought it back full time in December of 2014.   It has been on the market for 5 years now so even though I may not hear it discussed much, it appears as though some are enjoying it!  The flavor description for this snus says, "Light tobacco character with elements of cloudberry and lime, as well as hints of lavender and cardamom". It comes in a 21.6 gram can with 24 portions at 0.9 grams each. The nicotine content is 8mg/g (0.8%) or 7.2mg/portion.

If you're a US snuser and not familiar with hjortron, don't feel bad. It's not a common thing for Americans. Hjortron, or cloudberry, is more common in Nordic countries. It's a delicacy in Sweden, Norway and Finland, and is known for it's tart flavor! It tastes sort of like a cross between a raspberry and a red currant, but with a floral sweetness. It's also not as bitter as lingonberry.  If you're interested in trying it, I suggest cloudberry jam!

Now that we've done all the fun background stuff, let's get to know this snus a little better!  When you open the can, the cloudberry smell is quite apparent; it is rather fruity, mildly tart, and has a light floral sweetness to it. The portions are in the Swedish Match star formation, so I suggest fluffing them to loosen up the tobacco. The portions themselves feel quite soft and comfortable once you get them up under your lip! The flavor is a mild, fruity, natural taste of cloudberry. It’s like a mild raspberry, but more tart. There’s also a touch of floral sweetness and a very light hint of lavender. The nicotine strength feels to be at the regular level, and the flavor lasts about an hour on average!

Rating and Final Thoughts

This is a really unique, and tasty snus.  It's one that is pretty underrated, though, and doesn't get discussed very often.  It's a twist on the traditional GR flavor profile.  It's fruity, but not super sweet.  It has the Swedish Match quality to it, the GR name, and a different type of flavor than the average snus.  I rated it 3.67/5.  It's not one I'd use full time, but it's certainly one I get a craving for from time to time!  If you're looking to shake things up, this is definitely a snus that can do that!
