Grov Vit (White Portion) - Review. 29 January 2010.

Review Updated:  8 February 2021

When it comes to tobacco centric snus products, there are two that get discussed the most: Ettan and Grov. When it comes to Ettan, there is a pretty die-hard community of fans. However, I fall on the other side of the spectrum; I am more of a fan of Grov, myself, particularly the original portion version.  I find Grov to have a much better tobacco flavor, and it's a product I always have in rotation.  The main reason I'm revisiting this product is because it recently went through a design change, and I like the more muted colors over the previous bright/glossy look. The flavor description of Grov White Portion says, "Grov White portion snus is a robust snus with the well rounded taste of pure tobacco." Grov comes in a 21.6 gram can with 24 portions for 0.9 gram portions. The nicotine content is 8mg/g (0.8%), which breaks down to 7.2mg/portion.

Grov is the product of Willhelm Hellgren, and the story of Grov begins in 1840. Around this time, he was working in a tobacco factory but wanted his own factory, a dream that would come true in 1840. Over time, he developed the Grovsnus brand, which was trademarked in 1872. Grovsnus was so popular that eventually W:m Hellgren and Co was competition to Ettan. The Grovsnus brand was taken over by the Swedish Tobacco Monopoly in 1915, which would eventually become Swedish Match. Grov launched in the portion format in 1983, and white portion format 20 years later.

When you open the can, the aroma that greets you is a mild, rich, dark, robust tobacco smell.  The portions come in the Swedish Match star formation, which means they are wedged before going into the can.  I suggest fluffing them before putting one in your lip, it helps move the tobacco around and make the portion more soft!  The flavor is milder than Grov Original Portion, but still has a similar flavor.  This is a tobacco centric snus, and while the tobacco flavor is more gentle you still notice that familiar Grov taste.  The tobacco character is dark, robust, well rounded and rich, but more subdued than regular Grov Original Portion.  The nicotine strength feels about the regular strength level.  The flavor, on average, lasts up to about an hour!

Rating and Final Thoughts

I really dig Grov.  It's one of the best product lines on the market today.  For this version of Grov, it comes in at 4/5 for me.  Yes, the original portion version is better.  But, this one is still a tasty snus.  If you like tobacco centric flavors but want a milder version, Grov Vit is what you're looking for.  It has the same great taste, but in a much milder variant.

  1. How can you keep a portion for hours, the average portion snus is kept from 15-30 mins. after that, all the nicotine is gone, and the tobacco starts seeping through the pouch(unless you have a fiercly dry mouth that is). Beeing a user of swedish snus for about 6 years now, i would highly recomend that you switch more often for the full "mellow" if you will that is to be gained from both løs and pouched snus.

  2. Bob - Thanks for your comment! Many people (even veteran snus users) can leave portions in for up to 2 hours. Tastes vary according to user, and some enjoy it for longer durations. I find that enjoyment (in my case) comes longer into the portion being in my lip.

    Thanks for reading!

  3. I love grov portion, the ordinary kind, not the with portion stuff. I can say as a Swede with plenty of experience with snus, grov is as close you will get to pure tobacco flavored snus. It's indeed very "earthy" and might I add, rustic flavor. Its really great to see how you all love Swedish snus. Almost brings a tear to my eye.

    Happy snusing!
