La Morenita (Lös / Loose) - Snus Review. 2 March 2025.

About a month ago, I reviewed La Morenita White Portion.  I was quite impressed with it, and was really hopeful to try the loose version.  Well, I found it.  SwedishProducts.online sells it to the US.  If you missed me review of the portion version, let me do a quick recap on this brand.   I originally announced this snus back in 2014.  Conny Andersson, the blender for Islay Whisky Snus, was the one who started development of this one.  This snus was originally called Carmencita, and was said to use Zacapa Rum.  Conny left GN Tobacco in 2015, but GNT still planned to move forward and release this snus.   In 2016, La Morenita was unveiled.  The last time I got any news on this one was in 2017, then radio silence.  In February of 2024, La Morenita Loose launched by complete surprise on a Swedish e-store.  And of course early this year, the US was able to get the white portion version, and the loose!

SwedishProducts has a pretty good description of this snus:  "A well-rounded tobacco blend with the aroma and taste of genuine “El Dorado” rum from Guyana, as the snus has been aged and matured in rum casks.  The snus has a dark character with the taste of robust tobacco that has been aged in rum barrels. To bring out the snuffy taste, the tobacco has been topped with a splash of 8-year aged rum from the Caribbean. Its moisture results in a powerful release of flavor with mild lemon and berry notes. La Morenita has the same tobacco base as Islay Whiskey Tobacco".  This snus comes in a 50 gram can, just like the old days!  The nicotine content is 12mg/g.  Now, let's bake a prilla and check out this snus!

One note, when you first get this snus, the alcohol aroma can be a bit heavy.  However, if you let it breathe a bit, it will dial down a little.  Look at that loose, though!  That is a lot in the can, it's moist, and has a beautiful grind.  This snus is also incredibly easy to handbake, taking just seconds to put a prilla together.  The aroma is a thing of beauty:  rich, dark, peaty tobacco topped with notes of rum.  There is a dried fruit essence to it, some wood notes, and a little smokiness.  This was what I hoped it would be:  a more rich version of the white portion version.  The flavor comes on pretty quickly from the prilla.  In the taste, I pick up a beautiful mix of rum and tobacco.  The tobacco is dark, earthy, smoky, and peaty.  The rum is of a spiced essence, with clear notes of dried fruit, and a touch of oak.  It is nothing short of perfection.  In the nicotine strength, it does have a strong kick to it, but that may be due to me baking a bigger prilla.  The prilla stays well packed for 40-50 minutes, and the flavor release and longevity stays around just as long.

Rating and Final Thoughts

This snus is about as close to perfect as it gets.  It takes the white portion version I tried a few weeks ago to new levels.  While it's not something I'd use all the time, I can appreciate the beautiful flavor this one presents.  I rated it at a well earned 4.5/5.  If you've never had this one before, you have to try it.  If you like rum, or don't like rum, I suggest at least getting a can of this at some point in time.  We don't see new snus very often, especially new loose, so it was quite exciting to finally try this one out!
