Skruf Nyans (Norrsken) - Review (Discontinued). 13 April 2020.

NOTE:  This product has been discontinued and is no longer for sale.

It's been a few years since Skruf launched the Nyans line, a value priced line with some unique flavors. They originally launched with Jordskott (earthy berry flavor)Solglimt (grapefruit flavor), and Havsbris (sea breeze flavor).  In 2020, they added two new flavors, Månstoft (salted caramel) and Norrsken (violet licorice).  I did a little Google Translate magic, and Norrsken translates to "north shine", or "Northern Lights".  Not sure how that relates to the flavor.  Violet and Licorice isn't a common flavor, but is a favorite of mine.  Swedish Match did a Catch Violet Licorice in 2011, and again in 2014, that was pretty tasty.  JTI made the Gustavus Salvi product back in 2016, which was also pretty good stuff.  And the new company Kurbitssnus has their Morgondagg Snus, which is a favorite of mine.  Now, Skruf is giving it a go!

I grabbed this from Snusdirect.com, and the flavor description for this snus says:  "Notes of dark violet blended with hints of licorice".  Each can weighs 17.6 grams and has 22 portions, for 0.8 gram portions.  The nicotine content is 8mg/g (0.8%). Or 6.4mg/portion.

As mentioned before, blending violet and licorice isn't a very common thing in the world of snus.  However, when done right, it can be quite good.  This snus is an example of how it can be done the right way.  When you open the can, there is a pleasant, lightly sweet, floral aroma of violet. There are also lighter tones of black licorice. The portions are soft, plump, and quite comfortable in the lip. The flavor is relatively mild, but pleasant.  For a white portion, it also comes on pretty quick when you put a portion under the lip. The violet flavor is gentle, and lightly sweet. The black licorice tones come through in a mild way, and compliment the violet quite well. The nicotine strength feels to be about the regular strength level, and the flavor lasts around 45-50 minutes on average.

Rating and Final Thoughts

This is a pretty tasty snus.  I rated it at 3.63/5.  While not something I'd use every day, it's something that is a nice surprise anytime it crosses my path.  I think it's been since 2020 (the first time I reviewed it), so this is one of those "what's taken me so long to use it again" products.  But, when you review as many as I do, some of them fall off the radar from time to time.  If you're someone who likes licorice flavors, or floral flavors, you'll enjoy this one.  Skruf did a great job with the flavor of this one and it's one I definitely recommend.

  1. Hey Snubie! Many thanks for archiving this review! Although I never got to try Norrsken, your review led me to 2 other great products: Lundgrens Ortagard (for the violet flavor) and now Knox Karaktar Purple White (with a nice licorice and black current flavor). Keep up the good work!
