I've had a lot of requests to check out these Joey Pouches, so I grabbed an assortment of them to do a review today! This is a new line of nicotine pouches, made in the USA! Their site has a functional store locator, so it was pretty easy to find some of these for review. I've got 9 cans to check out today. This isn't all the flavors they make, I think they have something like 30ish different flavors. But, I have a few to start out with so I can get a good feel of the Joey brand. Joey comes in 3 strengths: 3mg, 6mg, and 9mg. The 3mg level is too low for me so I won't be messing with that. I found the 9mg to be the sweet spot for me, with a nice delivery at the regular level. The 6mg was okay, but a little lighter in strength than I enjoy.
So, what's different about Joey is that it has their "flavorbead" technology. This is a lot like Swedish Match's Volt Pearls tech I tried out several years ago. The can weighs 8g and has 20 pouches, weighing 0.4g each. I cut open one of the pouches here to show you the flavorbeads. The flavorbeads are made of microcrystalline cellulose, pectin, and sodium alginate. The Joey folks say this gives the product an "unmatched level of satisfaction, a quick nicotine release, and a longer-lasting experience of flavor". I do find them to have a decent flavor release, pretty similar to others out there. The pouches are slightly dry, but they do soften up. You can't fluff them like others on the market, due to the flavorbeads. The flavor longevity is decent, lasting about 45 minutes to an hour or so. Now, let's try them out and see how they taste!
Flavor Description: "Crisp, classic watermelon finish".
My Review: Opening the can, I get a nice, sweet, juicy aroma of watermelon. In the flavor profile, I find the watermelon taste to be sweet, but not overly sweet. It's fresh, fruity, and enjoyable!
Joey Banana
Flavor Description: "Banana essence with a sophisticated finish".
My Review: Banana isn't super common in pouches, so I was definitely curious to check it out. Opening the can, the banana aroma that comes through is pretty solid. The banana taste is also quite nice. It reminds me a lot of a banana Runtz candy. Tasty stuff!
Joey Cherry Cola
Flavor Description: "Cola flavor with effervescent notes and a hint of spice".
My Review: This one has a pretty smooth, mellow aroma. I get a little of the cherry first, and then some light cola tones. The cherry cola flavor is pretty enjoyable. It's mild, semi-sweet, and pretty well balanced.
Joey Cucumber Mint
Flavor Description: "Fresh cucumber with soft mint for a cooling, easy hit".
My Review: This one really caught me off guard, I defiintely enjoyed it. In the aroma, the cucumber comes through in a light way, with a subtle minty tone to it. The cucumber mint flavor isn't too overdone, and has a pretty mellow presence to it. It's not overly sweet, either. You can clearly taste the cucumber, and the mint adds a subtle freshness to it.
Joey Mango
Flavor Description: "Flavor-forward mango with a soft tropical taste".
My Review: I'm a big fan of tropical flavors, so this is one I was curious to check out. The mango aroma is present, tropical, tangy, and lightly sweet. The flavor is quite enjoyable. The mango flavor is present, and not overdone. It's lightly sweet, and lightly tangy. A nice balance! The tropical tones yield a nice flavor profile.
Joey Orange Sea Salt
Flavor Description: "Fresh orange flavor balanced by a clean salty twist".
My Review: This one has quite the citrusy character to it. The orange comes through pretty clearly once I open the can. In the taste, the orange flavor is tart, with a little sweetness to it. There is a slight salty nature to it, but it's not overly salty or anything. It's pretty well balanced!
Joey Spearmint
Flavor Description: "Light mint with a mellow chill".
My Review: Opening the can, I get a nice aroma of spearmint. It's lightly sweet, and pretty refreshing. In the flavor profile, the spearmint comes through pretty clearly, with a refreshing character. It's sweet, but not too overly sweet by any means. All in all, pretty good stuff!
Joey Red Tobacco
Flavor Description: "Rich tobacco notes with a smooth finish".
My Review: I was quite curious to check this one out. I've had a lot of products over the years that have a "tobacco flavor", and I enjoy seeing how each company approaches this flavor. In the aroma, it almost reminds me of smelling a box of cigarettes, as weird as that sounds. It's earthy, robust, slightly nutty, but with a faint sweetness to it. In the flavor profile, it's actually not bad. It's earthy, and lightly nutty at first. It's lightly sweet, and perhaps has a hint of smokiness to it. All in all, it's not bad.
Joey Fresh Wintergreen
Flavor Description: "A refreshing mint flavor, from start to finish".
My Review: And here it goes, we have reached the end of the road. Let's check out Joey Fresh Wintergreen. Opening the can, a present aroma of wintergreen comes through. It's slightly sweet, and pretty refreshing. The flavor isn't too bad. It's not as minty as other American wintergreen nicotine pouches I've had. It is sweet, and slightly minty, but it's not overly minty. It tastes a lot like a wintergreen Tic Tac.
Rating and Final Thoughts
There's a lot of ratings for these, so I'll throw them all down there for you to check out. To wrap it up, I'll say the flavors were pretty decent. My ratings ran from 3.17 to 3.5, which is pretty decent, for nicotine pouches. Mango and Cucumber Mint were my favorites of the two. But all in all, it was a pretty interesting lineup. They have a lot of others flavors I'm curious to check out down the road, so I'll probably post some more reviews in the future of this line!
