Today, I'm excited to talk about a new snus I've been looking forward to reviewing. This is Gaia Snus, a company making small batch, craft snus in Sweden! As someone with my own snus line and relatively small company, I like supporting others who are small/new/just starting up! Gaia started in 2015, but was formalized in 2020. What's cool about them is that they use all organic tobacco. They actually grow their own tobacco on 5 farms in Sweden. There isn't as much Swedish grown tobacco as there used to be in snus, so this is a neat addition! In their products, they use two kinds of tobacco: Alida, a Swedish tobacco with a milder taste, and Aztek tobacco, one with a more robust taste. Interesting fact about Aztek tobacco, it was "cultivated and used for ages when Jean Nicot de Villemain introduced tobacco to the French court", which as we know was the origin of nasal snuff which led to the creation of Swedish Snus! Now, let's get to know these products!
These products are basically the same, so I'm going to review them together, and talk about their minor differences. Opening up the cans, the aroma that comes through is a mild, but raw tobacco smell. It's lightly earthy, and gentle in nature. As far as the pouches go, the slim one reminds me of a super slim, the XL one reminds me of a regular slim. They are relatively dry, with a semi-soft portion material. The flavor is where these shine. The tobacco blend they used contributes a single, basic, no-frills flavor profile. It's a straightforward, raw, natural tobacco taste. It's absolutely beautiful. In the nicotine strength, the slim one is pretty light, feeling a little below regular strength. The XL one is lighter, but feels about regular strength. Both have a nice flavor longevity, lasting up to about an hour.
Flavor Description - "A snus with no added flavor and a mild but clear tobacco taste".
I want to note on that "no added flavor", that's something not a lot of companies do! We do it with our Artisan Signature Blend, but hardly anyone does that anymore. So, that's impressive. With everything being flavored or tobacco-free these days, you don't make a "no added flavor" snus to make money, that's for sure. You do it because you love snus.
Slim Portion Contents - 12g, 20p, 0.6g
XL Portion Contents - 15g, 20p, 0.75g
Slim Portion Nicotine - 8mg/g = 4.8mg/pouch
XL Portion Nicotine - 8mg/g = 6mg/pouch
Rating and Final Thoughts
These were awesome products, and I'm glad I got to try them out. I liked the XL more, because it was slightly stronger and had a more full pouch. I rated XL at 4.17/5, with slim falling right behind at 4.08/5. But, those are good scores, because I rarely rate anything over a 4. These are awesome products made by a company that really cares about tobacco, and snus in general. With everything being mint, or flavored these days, it warms my heart to see companies that really care about the snus industry, and making products for people who enjoy tobacco.
As far as I know, these are only available in Sweden at this time, and you can grab some from their website at http://gaiasnus.com!
