You are probably familiar with Lucy. They're a maker of nicotine gum, and pretty heavily advertise on social media. I recently reviewed their regular nicotine pouches, but today I'm going to be talking about their new "Kapsel" nicotine pouches. The description for this new format says, "Each pouch contains a Kapsel that when broken hydrates the pouch and releases flavor to ensure the best experience possible". In terms of their nicotine pouches, their description says these are "remarkably satisfying tobacco-free nicotine pouches", which to me reads like synthetic nicotine and not tobacco derived nicotine. Each pouch is said to have "a custom blend of nicotine and moisture enhancers". Also, they say their nicotine blend "has been engineered to provide the most nicotine sensation possible". These products have a lot in common, so as not to get too redundant I want to cover their similarities before we get into the individual reviews.
Lucy Cool Cider
Product Similarities
Can Contents: 7 grams, 15 pouches, 0.47g each
Mouthfeel - These are all the slim format, and are moderately moist with a slim fit in the lip.
Nicotine Strength - In this review, we're talking about their 8mg/pouch version which is (currently) their highest strength offered, and it feels comparable to regular strength snus. They also make a 4mg version, which is about half as strong.
Flavor Longevity - I notice these seem to all last about 30-40 minutes, on average.
Now, on to the reviews. In the reviews we'll simply be covering the aroma and flavor differences between each product.
The Kapsels - In the photos below, you can see them through the portion material. They're small, and round. In the Cool Cider and Spearmint ones, they're blue. In the Mango ones, they're slightly orange. I wasn't sure how to bust them, so I tried with my fingernails and that didn't work. Eventually, I found that I had to bite into them to bust them open. Which is challenging, because you don't want to bust open the pouch. It just takes some practice.
Flavor: "There’s a bit of minty freshness in there, but over time, it releases a light fruity flavor that you might recognize from a cup of warm apple cider".
Review: When you open the can, you'll notice a mild red apple smell. It's slightly minty, and with a hint of spice to it. It reminds me of a mild cinnamon. The flavor isn't too different. The apple flavor is mild, and lightly sweet. I pick up that subtle spice flavor again, which reminds me of a very light cinnamon. There's also a faint touch of mint to it.
Lucy Mango
Flavor: "Our Mango flavor is our sweetest pouch. The fruity flavor really jumps out at you when you first pop it into your mouth."
Review: This one has a nice, tropical aroma to it. It's a bright, juicy smell of mango. In the flavor, it's a pretty nice taste. The mango is natural, and fresh. It's lightly sweet, but not overly sweet.
Lucy Spearmint
Flavor: "A bold and fresh flavor that will leave your whole mouth feeling clean and minty
Aroma - mild, smooth spearmint."
Review: As a fan of spearmint, this is the one I was more into. Of the major mint flavors (peppermint and spearmint), I usually go for spearmint over peppermint. The aroma is a mild spearmint smell. It's pretty smooth, and lightly sweet. In the flavor, the spearmint isn't super bold. It's pretty mild, but fresh. It's lightly sweet, and also seems to have a dab of peppermint to it. It's pretty refreshing in nature.
So....about those "kapsels"?
Comparing these to regular Lucy Nicotine Pouches, I did notice the "kapsels" to release a little extra moisture into the pouch, and a little extra flavor. That's the main difference between these and regular nicotine pouches.
Rating and Final Thoughts
In the end, I ended up giving these the same rating as the regular Lucy pouches I reviewed. Yeah, the kapsels are cool, but they're not something that is going to make me buy these over regular Lucy products. So, as you'll see by the chart below, the ratings are the same: Mango at 3.46/5, Cider at 3.13/5, and Spearmint at 2.96/5. Don't get me wrong though, it's a pretty neat little innovation that I suggest you try out if you've never had them. It's cool when companies try something different.
