LD Salmiak (Original & White Portion) - Review. 16 November 2021.

It's been a bit since I've done a review on LD Salmiak, so I figured it was time I sat down and did another one.  Also, they've gone through a few changes including the hinged catch lid being replaced by a regular catch lid, and softer portion material.  These are products produced by Nordic Snus AB in Sweden that fall in the budget category.  However, even though they have a budget price, they have a high quality taste.  I like Nordic Snus AB's quote on this one, because it really nails it:  "Anyone can make a cheap snus, the art is to make a really good snus at a really good price".  Licorice flavored products are pretty common in the world of snus, but this is one that definitely stands apart from others out there.  Today, we're going to be checking out both LD Salmiak products:  original and white portion!

LD Salmiak Original Portion

Flavor:  "A full bodied taste of spicy tobacco with a mild, fruity taste of licorice".
Can Contents:  18 grams, 20 portions, 0.9g each
Nicotine Strength:  10mg/g (9mg/portion)

Licorice snus is such a funny thing to me.  When I started snus, I thought the term "licorice" meant Twizzlers.  I wasn't the biggest fan of black licorice snus at first, but it's one I grew to love.  In fact, my wife and I eat a ton of black licorice here now.  It grows on you!  Back to this snus:  when you open the can, a present aroma of black licorice greets you.  It's slightly sweet, a little spicy, and with a robust tobacco base.  The portions are nice and plump, and quite soft to the touch.  They're moist, but not overly moist.  In the flavor, you'll notice it's a little saltier than the average licorice snus.  But, that's one thing I love about salmiak:  it tastes like salty, black licorice.  It's slightly sweet, and accompanied by a rich tobacco base.  The nicotine strength feels to be about the regular strength mark, and the flavor lasts about 45 minutes!

LD Salmiak White Portion

Flavor:  "A full bodied taste of spicy tobacco with a mild, fruity taste of licorice".
Can Contents:  16 grams, 20 portions, 0.8g each
Nicotine Strength:  10mg/g (8mg/portion)

For a white portion snus, this one has a pretty present aroma.  Yeah, it's milder than the original portion version, but you still get a good amount of aroma from it.  The black licorice aroma comes through clearly, and there's a mellow tobacco aroma in the background, along with a subtle sweetness.  I notice the difference in the portion more with this one than the original portion version:  this white portion is much softer to the touch.  The flavor is milder than the original portion variant, but it's not lacking.  The black licorice taste is clear, with a saltiness to it and a smooth sweetness.  The tobacco base is pretty mellow, but still flavorful.  The strength on this one feels to be at the regular level, and the flavor lasts about an hour, on average.

Rating and Final Thoughts

I rated the OP at 4.08/5 and the WP at 4/5.  But still, pretty close ratings!  The original portion version took a dip in flavor longevity, but had a higher rating in aroma and flavor.  The white portion version was milder, so it took a dip in aroma and flavor, but had a longer lasting taste so it rated higher in longevity.  Both those things considered, they rated the same.  As far as personal preference goes, I have to give it to the original portion version.  If you like licorice products, LD Salmiak is one of the better ones out there.  Not just because it's my opinion, but it's been a highly regarded one in the snus community for many, many years!
