Stokers Wintergreen (Long Cut) Dip - Review. 6 September 2021.

Recently I announced that Snubie.com is getting back to basics - and that means more tobacco content.  I've had some requests to review American moist snuff/dipping tobacco, and as a tobacco enthusiast I figured what the heck, why not.  I'm a snus guy, don't get me wrong.  But I do enjoy all things tobacco!  I still believe snus to be the best harm reduced option for smokeless tobacco enjoyment/smoking cessation.  But these products are a fun break from time to time.  I've never used Stokers before, but it was one that came highly recommended when I asked around to find out what people wanted to see me review.  Stokers goes back to 1940 (about 81 years now) when it was founded in West Tennessee by Fred Stoker.  It's a family run business, now being steered by Bobby Stoker.  They use 100% American tobacco, primarily sourced from Tennessee and Kentucky.  Their long cut is said to be longer than other long cuts, as well.

Product Details
Flavor Description:  "This long cut moist snuff comes packed with a wintergreen flavor that lasts a long time. It’s packed with flavor and ready to deliver from the first to the last pinch."
Can Contents:  1.2oz / 34.02g
Nicotine Strength:  Northerner puts it as a 2 out of 5, and one source I found online had it listed at 3.8mg/g.

Usage
Of course, American moist snuff is a fermented product.  This means that you'll need to spit your saliva.  Traditionally, it is put in the lower lip.  However, as a snuser, I don't use it the regular way.  I take a pinch (without packing the can), and throw it in my upper lip.  That means less salivary gland contact and less spit.  Basically, I use it like regular lös snus.

I'm not the biggest fan of wintergreen, so keep that in mind.  I'll do my best to remain unbiased, but I did want to add that little caveat before we go into the review.  When you open the can, the aroma that comes through is a direct, lightly sweet, present wintergreen aroma.  There's an earthy tobacco base to it, a slight smokiness, along with subtle notes of hickory.  The tobacco is longer than the usual long cut, and packs well in the lip.  It has a nice moisture amount, and a steady release of flavor.  In the flavor profile, I pick up a present taste of wintergreen with a subtle sweetness to it.  In the background I find an earthy base tobacco, subtle wood notes, and a light smokiness.  The nicotine level feels about regular strength.  The flavor, on average, lasts about 40-50 minutes.  That's about how long I usually keep a pinch in for, so it works.

Rating and Final Thoughts

I'm not a big fan of wintergreen, so this one rated a little lower for me, at 3.63/5.  I did like the long cut on this one though, and found it quite easy to pinch and work with.  The moisture amount was nice, and I liked the flavor release.  The nicotine strength was satisfactory, as was the longevity of flavor.  If you like wintergreen, I think you'll enjoy this one.  I'm just not the biggest fan of wintergreen so it wasn't for me.

Disclaimer:  I'm still a snus guy.  If you're looking to switch from smoking to a safer form of smokeless tobacco, I still encourage Swedish Snus being that option.  In my opinion, Swedish Snus is the most enjoyable, safest oral smokeless tobacco product available.  Dip is a fun excursion from time to time, but I still encourage snus usage over dip usage.  If you want to learn more about Swedish Snus, you can check out our Snus FAQ here, or this informative video about snus, here.

  1. I really like stoker's tobacco, however it seems like every can I bought for the past month haven't been full cans. I just opened a can literally 5 minutes ago and it's literally two eighths of an inch below the rim. Why are we getting screwed out of a can of tobacco? Makes me want to just quit buying it and go back to Kodiak or something

  2. I usually dipped Grizzly WG but let me tell you, Stokers is pretty damn good, the one thing I realized is after dipping Stokers, Grizzly has a more chemical taste to it, I do not get that with Stokers, it is more pure tobacco taste. Good stuff.

  3. I've been purchasing long cut wintergreen tubs for years now I'm getting ready to switch to another brand. For the last two months it's nothing more than floor sweepings. The flavor is gone within minutes. It's no longer tender, it leaves me feeling like I have a mouth full of dry weeds.
