Copenhagen Straight (Long Cut) Dip - Review. 6 September 2021.

Recently I announced that Snubie.com is getting back to basics - and that means more tobacco content.  I've had some requests to review American moist snuff/dipping tobacco, and as a tobacco enthusiast I figured what the heck, why not.  I'm a snus guy, don't get me wrong.  But I do enjoy all things tobacco!  I still believe snus to be the best harm reduced option for smokeless tobacco enjoyment/smoking cessation.  But these products are a fun break from time to time.  This is one I've never done a review on, so this should be fun!  The Copenhagen brand itself goes all the way back to 1822.  The founder, George Weyman, actually based Copenhagen off an old Swedish Snus recipe!  It's made by USST (an Altria company), and contains 100% American tobacco!

Product Details
Flavor Description:  "A premium blend of dark-fired, air-cured tobacco with a smooth taste.  Air cured and dark-fired blend that's second to none.  A sweet and smooth tobacco taste from start to finish.  Barrel-aged up to 4 years."
Can Contents:  1.2oz / 34.02g
Nicotine Strength:  Source put it between 11.2mg/g and 13.9mg/g.

Usage
Of course, American moist snuff is a fermented product.  This means that you'll need to spit your saliva.  Traditionally, it is put in the lower lip.  However, as a snuser, I don't use it the regular way.  I take a pinch (without packing the can), and throw it in my upper lip.  That means less salivary gland contact and less spit.  Basically, I use it like regular lös snus.

First, if you're a snuser, "straight" isn't going to be something you're familiar with.  It's a flavor I enjoy, but sadly one we don't have available in snus.  I always tell people it reminds me of root beer with a tinge of wintergreen to it.  The reason for that being root beer and wintergreen both contain methyl salicylate.  Straight dip contains salicylic acid ethyl ester which is just a carbon group away.  So, with "straight" dips, you're going to find a flavor that may remind you of root beer!

When it comes to this one, It has a sweet, but spicy aroma to it.  I notice a presence of molasses, and an aroma that is reminiscent of root beer.  The tobacco is rich, and dark in nature.  I pick up slight notes of hickory, and a subtle smokiness.  The tobacco is the usual long cut, with a good amount of moisture.  It's pretty easy to pinch, and pack in the lip.  The flavor is sweet, but spicy.  Again, it reminds me of root beer with a hint of wintergreen.  The tobacco taste is dark, rich, and present.  There are subtle notes of hickory, along with a mild smokiness.  The nicotine strength feels about the regular level, and the flavor lasts about 45-50 minutes, on average.  That's about how long I usually keep a pinch in for.

Rating and Final Thoughts

This one rated in at 3.46/5.  I really enjoy the straight flavor.  One of the reasons I'll occasionally check out dip is because we don't have that flavor in snus.  I wish we did, but we don't.  It's a really unique, enjoyable flavor.  I love the balance of sweet and spicy with the dark tobacco components.  Copenhagen Straight Long Cut is a good example of this flavor profile if you're looking to check it out!

Disclaimer:  I'm still a snus guy.  If you're looking to switch from smoking to a safer form of smokeless tobacco, I still encourage Swedish Snus being that option.  In my opinion, Swedish Snus is the most enjoyable, safest oral smokeless tobacco product available.  Dip is a fun excursion from time to time, but I still encourage snus usage over dip usage.  If you want to learn more about Swedish Snus, you can check out our Snus FAQ here, or this informative video about snus, here.

Comments

  1. I accidentally got a can of straight instead of southern blend and went in for a pinch, I thought it had soured or gone bad at first. I found this article looking for what the flavor profile is supposed to be, and it absolutely hits the palate like root beer with a hint of wintergreen. Almost licorice.I don't get the hickory or smokiness, just straight sickly sweet root-beer-wintergreen-molasses. Spot on description on your part.
