Copenhagen Southern Blend (Long Cut) Dip - Review. 6 September 2021.

Recently I announced that Snubie.com is getting back to basics - and that means more tobacco content.  I've had some requests to review American moist snuff/dipping tobacco, and as a tobacco enthusiast I figured what the heck, why not.  I'm a snus guy, don't get me wrong.  But I do enjoy all things tobacco!  I still believe snus to be the best harm reduced option for smokeless tobacco enjoyment/smoking cessation.  But these products are a fun break from time to time.  I actually did a video on this one back in 2012, but I've never done an article on it.  The Copenhagen brand itself goes all the way back to 1822.  The founder, George Weyman, actually based Copenhagen off an old Swedish Snus recipe!  It's made by USST (an Altria company), and contains 100% American tobacco!

Product Details
Flavor Description:  "Smoked with oak and hickory hardwood for a mellow taste. Made with the spirit of the South and 100% American-grown tobacco.  Made with the spirit of the South!  Smoked with select oak and hickory hardwoods.  A smooth and mellow tobacco taste."
Can Contents:  1.2oz / 34.02g
Nicotine Strength:  Source put it between 11.2mg/g and 13.9mg/g.

Usage
Of course, American moist snuff is a fermented product.  This means that you'll need to spit your saliva.  Traditionally, it is put in the lower lip.  However, as a snuser, I don't use it the regular way.  I take a pinch (without packing the can), and throw it in my upper lip.  That means less salivary gland contact and less spit.  Basically, I use it like regular lös snus.

The aroma of this one is rich in tobacco, but mellow, and balanced.  I pick up subtle notes of wood, reminding me of oak and hickory.  It has a slight sweetness to it, along with a mellow smokiness.  The tobacco is your regular long cut, with longer strands.  It's pretty easy to pinch, and pretty moist, so it packs in the lip well.  In the flavor, I notice a mellow tobacco taste with an almost black tea like presence.  It's citrusy, and earthy.  There are light notes of hickory, and oak.  I pick up a smokiness to it, but it's not overdone by any means.  In terms of nicotine strength, this one comes in about the regular level.  I find the flavor lasts about 45-50 minutes, on average.  That's about how long I usually keep a pinch in for, personally.

Rating and Final Thoughts

This one is a pretty solid, interesting tasting dip product.  I rated it at 3.63/5.  I prefer extra long cut myself, but long cut would be my second favorite cut after that one.  I enjoy the earthy tobacco base of this one along with the black tea and citrusy components I dig out of the flavor profile.  It's a mellow, balanced dip.  It's certainly one that someone could use as your all day, daily driver.  If you're a tobacco lover, this has that familiar, rich tobacco taste of Copenhagen, but in a more well balanced flavor profile!

Disclaimer:  I'm still a snus guy.  If you're looking to switch from smoking to a safer form of smokeless tobacco, I still encourage Swedish Snus being that option.  In my opinion, Swedish Snus is the most enjoyable, safest oral smokeless tobacco product available.  Dip is a fun excursion from time to time, but I still encourage snus usage over dip usage.  If you want to learn more about Swedish Snus, you can check out our Snus FAQ here, or this informative video about snus, here.
