Copenhagen Packs (Wintergreen) - Review. 21 September 2021.

Recently I announced that Snubie.com is getting back to basics - and that means more tobacco content.  I've had some requests to review American moist snuff/dipping tobacco, and as a tobacco enthusiast I figured what the heck, why not.  I'm a snus guy, don't get me wrong.  But I do enjoy all things tobacco!  I still believe snus to be the best harm reduced option for smokeless tobacco enjoyment/smoking cessation.  But these products are a fun break from time to time.  This is one I've never had before, but it looked interesting to me so I figured I'd give it a go.  The Copenhagen brand itself goes all the way back to 1822.  The founder, George Weyman, actually based Copenhagen off an old Swedish Snus recipe!  It's made by USST (an Altria company), and contains 100% American tobacco!

Usage
Of course, American moist snuff is a fermented product.  This means that you'll need to spit your saliva.  Traditionally, it is put in the lower lip.  However, as a snuser, I don't use it the regular way.  I simply throw it in my upper lip like a portion of snus.  That means less salivary gland contact and less spit.  Basically, I use it like regular portion snus.  Here's a close up look at the "packs".  These are bigger than dip pouches or snus portions.  The material is thin, and feels like pantyhose.  It's soft in the lip, and pretty malleable.  They're also quite comfortable.  They also seem to be able to stretch and move in the lip without ripping open, which is something I was curious about when I first saw these.

When you open the can, the aroma that comes through is a straight up, in your face, American wintergreen smell.  As you may know, I'm not the biggest wintergreen fan.  The pouches are plump, stretchy, soft, and not dripping in moisture.  They feel great in the lip, though!  The flavor, you guessed it:  wintergreen.  It's that straight up, powerful, present, in your face, American wintergreen taste.  If you like the flavor of wintergreen, this one has it in spades.  It has a subtle sweetness to it, and a mild tobacco character. I don't pull out as much tobacco taste as I do with their long cut, for example, but you can get them in the flavor, albeit in a more mild way.  The subtle notes of wood and smoke are quite faint, and way in the background.  In terms of strength, this one feels comparable to a regular snus portion.  The flavor, on average, lasts for a little over an hour.

Rating and Final Thoughts

This one was a really interesting product.  I rated it at 3.21/5, but that lower score is mainly due to the 2's I gave it on aroma and flavor.  Again, I'm not a wintergreen fan.  However, if they released a natural version of this, or a straight version of this, I'd be all over it.  The portion material is innovative, and quite impressive.  It fills out the lip really well, but feels comfortable at the same time.  If you like having a big pinch in your lip but want a pouch with some more weight to it, check this one out.  It may be just what you're looking for.

    1. They had some others in the works I heard (straight, mint, natural, etc), but none ever came out.

  3. FDA approval/regulations are the reason for only WG at this point.
