This past summer I reviewed Velo Nicotine Pouches (4mg), a new nicotine pouch product from RJ Reynolds, makers of Camel "SNUS". Velo is a new product from them that contains nicotine, but no tobacco. This category has been growing lately as people who want to quit tobacco but not nicotine are looking for alternatives. This category has also become quite popular with vapers lately, as well! I've only been able to find the 4mg ones locally, so I ordered some of these from Nicokick, a US based webstore that sells nicotine pouches online.
According to Reynolds, Velo contains "no tobacco leaf or other tobacco plant matter apart from the nicotine extracted from the tobacco plant". I've cut open a pouch so you can see what's actually inside the pouch. It's a very fine material. Their website says Velo Pouches consist of nicotine derived from the tobacco plant, microcrystalline cellulose, water, salt, sucralose, citric acid, and artificial flavor. As far as how it's made, I don't know. Reynolds has never been very transparent about how they make their products. I've tried for 10 years to get information about how their "snus" is made and have yet to hear a reply. So I imagine this will be much like that, a mystery about how it's made.
Velo Citrus 2mg
Flavor: “A crisp and flavorful citrus taste experience”.
Contents: 3.5 gram can, 15 pouches, 0.23g/pouch.
Nicotine: 2mg (not sure if that is in mg/g, or mg/portion)
It is interesting to note, the 4mg version has 0.43g portions, and these are almost half that. Perhaps that is how they cut down the strength.
The aroma of this one is very citrusy; the name fits quite well. It's a really sweet mix of lemon and orange. The pouches are really light; there's not much to these, honestly. They're a little dry to the touch, but get softer as they get more moist. The flavor is a sweet citrus taste, seemingly a mix of orange and lemon. I notice more orange than lemon, but both are there. The flavor itself tends to last around 25-30 minutes on average. As far as nicotine goes, I really didn't notice any with these. But, I'm used to using mostly regular strength-strong snus products.
Velo Mint 2mg
Flavor: “A refreshing and cooling mint flavor experience”.
Contents: 3.5 gram can, 15 pouches, 0.23g/pouch.
Nicotine: 2mg (not sure if that is in mg/g, or mg/portion)
As mentioned before, the 4mg version has 0.43g portions, and these are almost half that. Perhaps that is how they cut down the strength.
When you open the can, you'll notice the mint smell is incredibly sweet. It's a lot like the Camel Frost product. If you've ever had that one before, you'll know what I'm talking about. If you haven't, just know it's very very sweet in aroma, and taste. The portions are slim, and very light in weight; there isn't much to these. They're dry to the touch, but get more comfortable as they get more moist. There's a light cooling presence/tingle when you put a portion under the lip, which I notice with most mint products. The flavor is milder than Camel Frost, but is very similar. It's a very, very sweet mint taste. I didn't really notice any nicotine with these, but I use stronger products when it comes to snus. And, nicotine pouches for that matter.
I probably wouldn't use these again, personally. When there are better products available such as Zyn and Lyft, I would honestly just stick with one of those. They're better quality and have more nicotine.
