Kodiak Straight Long Cut (American Moist Snuff/Dip) - Review. 9 May 2022.

Over the past year, I've been getting Snubie back to basics - focusing on more tobacco products and less non-tobacco products.  That means diving into the world of American moist snuff, or, dip.  Granted, I'm a snus guy, and I don't really use dip, but I love tobacco and it's fine to try new things.  Today, we're checking out an American Moist Snuff Co product:  Kodiak Straight Long Cut!  This product recently went through a redesign, and I've had a lot of requests to check out Kodiak.  I've only been able to find the wintergreen ones, but I was driving through Tennessee recently and found this one!  Kodiak was originally introduced in 1980 and was the company's first moist snuff product.  It was technically the flagship of American Snuff Co until 2001, when Grizzly was introduced.

The product description for this one says, "For over a century, the float plane has delivered explorers to the most remote corners of the world, in search of terrain that lies unconquered. Kodiak’s long-lasting straight flavor pays tribute to those seemingly endless excursions".  Each can weighs in at the standard 1.2 oz, or 34.02 grams.  The nicotine content I've found online lists Kodiak at 10.7-10.9mg/g.  The side label on the can says this one contains 100% US tobacco.

For my snus audience, straight is a hard flavor to describe, because we don't have it in snus.  It's really good, though.  It's a sweet, spicy taste of tobacco.  It's similar to root beer, if you've had that before.  The aroma of this one is a smoky, slightly sweet, earthy tobacco.  There's some spice to it, but overall it's pretty well balanced, and rich in nature.  The long cut tobacco is pretty soft, with a good moisture amount, and is easy to pinch and put in the lip.  I'm a snus guy, so I always use my upper lip.  I find it to give a longer lasting flavor and less drip.  In the flavor profile, it's that classic "straight" flavor, but it's milder, and more balanced than others I've had before.  It's a sweet, spicy taste of tobacco, with some smokiness and very light hints of wood.  The nicotine on this one feels to deliver around the regular level, and the flavor lasts about 40-45 minutes.

Rating and Final Thoughts

All in all, a pretty solid product.  I rated it at 4/5.  I've never tried Kodiak before this one, but I find it to be a pretty good quality product.  I paid about 4$ USD for this can in Tennessee, which isn't too bad.  That's about what I pay for Grizzly here in Arkansas when I do reviews of it.  For the price, it's decent.  Compared to other straights I've had, I find this one to be more subtle, and balanced.  I'm still trying to hunt down the Kodiak Natural, so hopefully I'll have a review of that one here before too long.  But for now, it is nice to get a review up of one of these new Kodiak products!

Disclaimer:  I'm still a snus guy.  If you're looking to switch from smoking to a safer form of smokeless tobacco, I still encourage Swedish Snus being that option.  In my opinion, Swedish Snus is the most enjoyable, safest oral smokeless tobacco product available.  Dip is a fun excursion from time to time, but I still encourage snus usage over dip usage.  If you want to learn more about Swedish Snus, you can check out our Snus FAQ here, or this informative video about snus, here.

  1. Kodiak the only bear you can pinch. Used to do the wintergreen years ago. Big fan of straight and always wondered if there was a snus like this but you answered that. Would love a straight snus as I have converted to snus. Keep up the great work
